Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU)
Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) is located in the ancient capital city of Xi’an, a historical place that has nurtured the civilizations of 13 dynasties such as Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang. NPU was founded in 1938 in Hanzhong and moved to Xi’an in October 1957 by combining the Northwest Institute of Engineering with the East China Institute of Aeronautics. Later in 1970, the Department of Aeronautics of Harbin Institute of Engineering merged with the university.
NPU is a research-oriented, multi-disciplinary, international university of science and technology, and has strong capabilities and outstanding achievements in aeronautics, astronautics and marine technology, which makes it very unique and distinguished from other institutions. With special emphasis on science and technology, NPU also offers well developed programs in the humanities, economics, management and law.
NPU is one of the 211 and 985 universities and enjoys a high reputation. NPU is member of the Excellent Union 9 universities (E9) in China.
The university has 15 academic schools, offering 54 undergraduate programs, 101 postgraduate programs, 57 doctoral programs, and 12 postdoctoral programs. NPU has more than 3,500 faculty, including 1,300 full and associate professors, 15 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) or the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), 15 chair and lecture professors of Cheung Kung Scholars Program, and ten winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Currently, the university has 28,363 students, including 14,362 undergraduates, 5,834 master’s degree students, 2,985 full-time PhD candidates, 2,521 professional degree students and 170 international students.
Since the foundation, NPU has graduated more than 140,000 students including 15,000 master students and 3,000 PhD students with more than 30 becoming members of CAS/CAE, 30 generals, six recipients of China’s Top Ten Outstanding Youth title, and the first PhDs awarded in China in six different disciplines.
The university has two beautiful campuses. The Youyi campus is located adjacent to the West Market of the Tang dynasty. The Chang’an campus is situated between majestic mountain scenery and meandering rivers.
School of Management, NPU
NPU started its management education with the establishment of the Management Research and Teaching Office in 1957. In 1985, the Department of Management was founded, and in 1990, the School of Management (SOM) was unveiled. The School applies itself to equip high-quality managerial talent with concrete management theories, systematic professional knowledge and skillful practice. The School is also one of the earliest schools to provide an MBA program (a Sino-British joint effort) and the Master of Science in Engineering program in China. A set of advanced disciplines including project management, management system engineering, enterprise management, and plant management, have been established.
At present, the SOM has five departments including department of business administration, marketing, information management and information systems, accounting, and project management. The school offers 5 undergraduate programs, 3 postgraduate programs, 1 doctoral programs, and 1 postdoctoral programs. SOM has 71 faculty, including 55 full and associate professors. Currently, the SOM has 1552 students, including 478 undergraduates, 148 master’s degree students, 56 full-time PhD candidates, 871 professional degree students.
Since the establishment of the School, over 3,000 students have graduated. Furthermore, over 8,000 senior and middle level managers, plant managers and plant technicians have been trained in the school. The School has made important contribution on the constructions to the national economy, especially in area of the defense technology and science.
